1. How to Wash Neoprene

Neoprene is a fabric that is used to make many different items such as wet suits, gloves, medical supports for joints, etc. It is a fabric that is easy to clean, however. With a mild, fabric detergent and warm water, you can keep your neoprene items clean and like new.
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • warm water
  • mild liquid fabric detergent
  • soft cloth for spot removal
  • non-chlorine bleach

 Step 1

Fill a sink full of warm water and add a mild, liquid, fabric detergent.

  • Step 2

Submerge neoprene items into water until completely covered. Let items soak for approximately 1 hour. If stains exist on the fabric, spot clean with a non-chlorine bleach only.

  • Step 3

Rinse fabric thoroughly with cold water. The cold water will eliminate any soap on the fabric without causing excess sudsing. Pat items dry between the folds of a towel to absorb excess water.

    2. How to Clean Neoprene

    Clean Neoprene
Neoprene is a synthetic rubber substance that is water resistant and stretchable. Its buoyancy makes it a perfect material for wetsuits that are used by deep sea divers, snorkelers, and surfers. The neoprene will need to be cleaned in order to remove any residues that have built up on the wetsuit during water activities. Cleaning is as easy as soaking and hanging the neoprene to dry.
  • Instructions

    Things You'll Need:

    • Warm water Liquid dish soap Tub or large basin Scrub brush Clothes line Plastic clothes pins Plastic hanger
    1. Step 1

Fill a tub or large basin with warm water and add a small amount of liquid dish soap. The water should be slightly sudsy but not overflowing with bubbles.

    2. Step 2

Give the neoprene wetsuit a good shake before washing to remove any debris that may have collected on it. Sand, loose dirt and ocean plant life can all be found on the outside of a wetsuit now and then, so it is a good idea to rid the neoprene of these items before laying it in the tub.

    3. Step 3

Lay the neoprene wetsuit in the soaking tub for approximately 30 minutes. Swish the wetsuit around in the water to remove any residue that has accumulated on the surface of the neoprene.

    4. Step 4

Scrub the neoprene with a soft scrub brush. A gentle scrubbing will help to loosen any dirt stains that have become embedded in the neoprene. The soap from the soaking tub should be sufficient to clean the stain, but more can be added to the scrub brush if necessary.

    5. Step 5

Hang the neoprene wetsuit to dry. Line drying by hanging the wetsuit by the legs with plastic clothespins is ideal. Otherwise, use a hanger. The hanger should be plastic and not made of wire, which can rust and leave stains on the freshly washed neoprene.

    3. How to Cut Neoprene

Cut neoprene to a precise size for any pattern or project. Neoprene is a spongy plastic polymer that is often backed with thin nylon fabric. The water-sports community has utilized neoprene for its waterproof and durability qualities. Neoprene is commonly known for its use in wet suits and kayak spray skirts but is also used to make laptop cases, wine bags and lunch sacks, shoes components and adhesives. Slice neoprene cleanly to reduce waste and give it a straight edge.
    Instructions

    Things You'll Need:

    • For straight cut:
    • Work bench or plywood sheet
    • Yard stick
    • White chalk
    • Retractable razor blade knife
    • For curve cut:
    • Work bench or plywood sheet
    • Pattern
    • Chalk
    • Sharp scissors

      Straight Cut

    1. Step 1

Lay the neoprene sheet, with the nylon fabric facing up, on a large flat cutting surface like a work bench or piece of plywood.

    2. Step 2

Trace the desired length of the cut along the edge of a yard stick with a piece of white chalk.

    3. Step 3

Remove the yard stick and press the edge of the razor blade through the neoprene at the inside of the chalk line at the end furthest from you.

    4. Step 4

Slowly pull the blade toward you as you stay on the inside of the chalk guideline.

    5. Step 5

Pull the cut pieces apart and dust off the chalk marks by tapping on them with your hands.

    6. Curve Cut

    7. Step 1

Lay the neoprene sheet, with the nylon fabric facing up, on a large flat cutting surface like a work bench or piece of plywood.

    8. Step 2

Place your pattern on the neoprene and trace its outline with a piece of white chalk.

    9. Step 3

Remove the pattern and steadily cut along the inside of the line with a sharp pair of scissors.

    10. Step 4

Pull the cut pieces apart and dust off the chalk marks by tapping on them with your hands.
